History:
Ellen Osler Home was opened January 2000, by The Salvation Army.

Description : Ellen Osler Home is a Tudor style home in the heart of Dundas community, which is nestled next to the west end of the City of Hamilton. A 10 bedroom, 3 full bathrooms, 2 half baths, along with a large renovated kitchen, dining room, living room, laundry room, separate meeting rooms for programs and one on one counselling. There is a large porch on the side of the house overlooking the lawn and garden.

Residents Accepted
: Ellen Osler Home provides for the needs of women in conflict with the law over the age of 18, regardless of origin, who are on day parole, full parole, mandatory Supervision, temporary absence passes, probation, work releases or bail. Referrals can be made by the women themselves, by Parole Officers and/or others’ connected to these women in a professional relationship.

Exclusions:
A woman must be able to walk up stairs as we are not wheel chair accessible at this point in time. Also, if a woman’s needs are greater than the services offered.

Admission Procedure
: Usually the woman will be referred to Ellen Osler Home with the assistance of her Case Management team at the Grand Valley Institution. An Ellen Osler Home representative visits GVI once a week to enable women to have direct interviews. This provides an opportunity for mutual exchange of information and assessment. A women may however contact us via collect call if unable to meet face to face. A community assessment team is established and the final decision is made regarding acceptance to our program.

Programs:
Ellen Osler Home currently offers individual bedrooms to 8 women and an in-house Mother/Child program which includes housing for 2 women with child(ren) under school age. The in-house program includes counselors on staff 24 hours, life skills coaching, mother’s parenting group, budgeting, housing search, job search, literacy, chaplaincy program, and recreation programs.

CSC programs currently available for women are: Cognitive Skills, Choices, Anger Management and Parenting.

In the community we have access to all the amenities plus a direct bus route to Hamilton, which connects to many affordable women sensitive social services programs.
