History:  The Salvation Army New Direction (formally known as Kitchener Booth Centre) was established in 1955 as a hostel serving men in need of emergency housing.  In 1990-91, extensive renovations took place with additional programs being implemented in the area of Addictions, a Correctional Residential Facility, as well as continuing as a men’s shelter. In 2002 all CRF contract beds were changed to private rooms. At the end of March, 2003 the Hostel was closed leaving the half-way house as the only function of the Centre. In December 2004 the name was change to New Directions. 

Description:  The New Directions is a two-story building with a capacity of 28 Correctional beds. Of this number 22 are private rooms and there are two 3 bed dorms. There is a sitting area with a TV/sitting room, kitchenette and pay phone.  There is a dining room where 2 hot meals and one bagged lunch are prepared by qualified staff.  There is a chapel and chaplain on location for your spiritual needs.  The centre is located close to the downtown area, public transportation, hospitals and recreational facilities.

Residents Accepted:  Men who are eligible for Day Parole, Full Parole, Statutory Release, U.T.A and E.T.A’s.   Open to lifers and ambulatory seniors.

Exclusions:  None. A Community Assessment Team reviews all cases.

Admission Procedure: A Community Assessment to reside at New Directions must be completed.

Program:  The length of stay varies according to the individual and based on decision of CSC/NPB.  Residents are expected to find employment and/or attending school or retraining. Chapel Services and spiritual counseling are available.
