History: Previously a provincially funded halfway house, Gallagher opened in 1999 as one of two federal residences in a multi-faceted agency, St. Leonard's Society of London.St. Leonard's Society of London was first incorporated in 1969 as a St. Leonard's House. The original Gallagher Centre (formerly called Egerton Centre), served federal correctional clients until 1985 when residents moved to Cody Apartment Centre. Egerton Centre then provided accommodation to provincial correctional clients until 1995 when provincial funding was withdrawn for all halfway houses in Ontario. Gallagher re-opened in 1999 to serve federal clients under a new contract with CSC.

The building has been renovated and boasts a spacious dining room and kitchen area overlooking an expansive backyard. The structure offers a supportive, group home type of setting, where the bedrooms are upstairs. The large kitchen area would be of interest to those who enjoy spending time in the kitchen. The arrangement of the main floor encourages positive interactions between staff and residents.

The center is close to major bus routes, a variety store and is within walking distance of larger shopping centres. The centre maintains a large yard with flower and vegetable gardening available for the avid horticulturalist, or those who enjoy it as a hobby. Recreation is available and the centre retains 5 full memberships for both of the local YMCA's.

Residents Accepted: All residents must be 18 years of age or older, serving a federal sentence, and motivated to participate fully in programs related to their personal criminogenic need areas. All candidates are considered.

Exclusions: St. Leonard's Society' of London will consider all applicants on a case by case basis in conjunction with the local CSC office and the London Police Department. There are no specific exclusionary criteria; however, level of risk to the community is clearly considered.

Staff: St. Leonard's Society of London's residential facilities are staffed by qualified counselors on a 24 hour a day basis. Crisis intervention or assistance is available 365 days a year.
