History: Incorporated in 1972, St. Leonard’s Hamilton has a long history
of providing quality programs and services to adult federal offenders.
Originally operating under the name of Astra Society, the program was an eight
bed residential facility providing support to male offenders released into the
community on conditional release. Today, The St. Leonard’s Society operates
two residential facilities, a 20 bed "Place of Transition" and a 28
bed Substance Abuse Treatment Centre. The agency contracts with the Correctional
Service of Canada to provide Substance Abuse and Living Skills programs and
operates a provincially contracted Intermittent Sentence Program. Starting in
2000, an employment-training program will enable clients to acquire
certification in computer technology and repair.
Description: The Treatment Centre at 24 Emerald Street was initially two
"century" homes that have been joined together with a third building,
providing 28 beds, offices, program and leisure space. The house is centrally
located in the downtown area of Hamilton close to buses, employment, educational
facilities, the YMCA and library. Laundry and recreational services are
available on site. Meals are also provided.
Residents Accepted: Male Federal Offenders with substance abuse problems.
Exclusions: All offenders will be considered, based upon their willingness
to participate in substance abuse treatment and their suitability for release to
the Hamilton community.
Admission Procedure: Staff conduct regular visits to federal institutions in
the Ontario Region and an admissions committee meets every two weeks to review
Community Assessments.
Program: Trained, professional staff conduct a comprehensive assessment to
determine program suitability. "Working towards Success" (our own
program) and Choices (A Brief Relapse Prevention Program) are offered.
Additionally, staff provide individual counselling and assistance with all
aspects of the release plan. Referrals to other community services are made when
necessary.
