History: Cody Apartment Centre is one of two residences in a multi-faceted agency, St. Leonard's Society of London.
St. Leonard's Society of London was first incorporated in 1969 as St. Leonard's House. The original house opened in 1970 to serve CSC clients, and, on moving to King Edward Avenue in 1985, was changed to Cody Apartment Centre. Cody was chosen for its physical structure to better suit the needs of federal clients.
The building has been converted so that the second floor operates as a group home, while the first and third floors are self-contained apartment units. The building is zoned for 20 beds. The apartment units are fully furnished allowing for a unique opportunity for the development of independent living skills for those preparing for discharge. This structure is also suitable for lifers or long term clients who will have a chance to reside in a bachelor suite and establish a higher level of independence prior to discharge.
The center is close to a major bus route and variety store and is within walking distance of larger shopping centers. The center maintains a pool table and recreational area, and retains 5 full memberships for both of the local YMCA's.
Residents Accepted: All residents must be 18 years of age or older, serving a federal sentence, and motivated to participate fully in programs related to their personal criminogenic need areas. All candidates are considered.
Exclusions: St. Leonard's Society of London will consider all applicants on a case by case basis in conjunction with the local CSC office and the London Police Department. There are no specific exclusionary criteria; however, level of risk to the community is clearly considered.
Admission Procedure: Prospective residents should contact Cody Centre, either directly (mail or phone) or through a relative or professional contact. An application must be completed and staff will conduct interviews in the institutions on a regular basis. All applications will be reviewed by the Community Assessment Team and a letter indicating their decision will be sent to the applicant.
Staff: St. Leonard's Society of London's residential facilities are staffed by qualified counselors on a 24 hour a day basis. Crisis intervention or assistance is available 365 days a year.
Programs: Residents of Cody Centre have ongoing access to one-on-one counseling with a primary counselor, which may include: goal setting, personal planning, budgeting, shopping and meal planning, cooking, job search skill development, etc. Agency counselors are part of a multi-disciplinary team, which may include parole officers, psychologists, and other community professionals. In addition, group programs are available on site including Choices (substance abuse treatment), Anger Management, and Employment Readiness. All group programs are offered frequently and in a format which enables residents to pursue their individual goals as quickly as possible. Referrals to the community are made where indicated and may include Counterpoint (John Howard), psychological counseling, sex offender group treatment and relapse prevention, literacy, education, and two local resource centers (Glen Cairn and Crouch).
Institutions Agency Visits: Agency representatives visit all federal institutions in the Kingston vicinity approximately once every 6 weeks. Federal institutions in the Bracebridge area are visited approximately once every 10 weeks. Staff members participate in all symposiums available.
